Rambo: My Review (please read before going)

Well, I was of course very excited for the new Rambo film as I had been very pleased with how Sly Stallone treated the Rocky Balboa story. He did a great job of making Rocky very believable at the age he was both as character and in real life. I highly recommend Rocky Balboa, it was a very good movie.
So, today we saw Rambo.
It was HORRIBLE!!!
I have never seen so much gore and I have seen a lot. This made Saving Private Ryan look like a Disney movie. Exploding heads, arms, legs, bodies blown in half, in quarters, decapitations, intestines, you name it.
I am saving you the trouble my friends. I am very very embarrassed that I went to this film. It was NEEDLESS gore. I mean you can shoot and a little blood fly and I know the guy is dead, I don't need to see him literally sawn in two by a machine gun and watch his body fall in slow motion in two directions!
I couldn't even tell you if it was a good story or not, it was that putrid. The amount of "F-bombs" was overwhelming.
Please, please don't go see this movie. It ain't worth it!
On top of that, new revelations have come out today that Stallone was injecting HGH steroid for this film.
Sorry to be so graphic but I really wanted to warn you. I am ashamed that I saw this movie and God has dealt with me severely this evening in my Bible study and Prayer time. His conviction was so much that I felt like a dirty filthy stinking scumbag.
I am clean now, praise be to Jesus for his precious blood, but this is why I should never have gone in the first place, I wasted the precious blood of Jesus.
Well, anyway, thank you for your patience, carry on!

I was planning on going (as I'm a fan of "First Blood"), but I value your opinion and will opt out on this one. I must say that I'm not terribly surprised about the violence factor. It's what sells a lot of tickets. I agree w/ your assessment of "Rocky Balboa". I think people, in general, underestimate Stallone's intelligence because of his appearance and vocabulary. "Rocky" was his brainchild. He scraped up the cash to start the film and it won "Best Picture" at the Oscars. God gave us an incredible tool: imagination. When moviemakers show us everything, it dulls us and in many cases, disappoints us. How many times have we said "the book was better than the movie?"

Thanks Mick, I am glad I could save one person from this travesty.
You know I am a film person. Sometimes it is necessary to have violence to tell the story.
I think that two of the greatest films of all time, perhaps top five both, Godfather and Godfather II.
The violence was not THE story, the violence was a PART of the story.
It was also kept to a necessary level of which to be real yet not overglorified.
We have become dulled to both sex and violence in our society.
I am well aware of that, and am struggling with that constantly. As a film lover, I find that unfortunately the best films are usually R rated and that is tough as a Christian.
Love to hear more thoughts on this.

Something I found while watching "Mannafest" w/ Perry Stone last night: he mentioned 7 hindrances to accepting Christ and one was entitled "No Feelings." He used a passage from Ephesians 4:19; "and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness." IMO, watching too much violence dulls our senses to the point where events that are supposed to be shocking become routine. We slowly lose our ability to respond with compassion under adverse conditions. It begins to harden the heart.

I am glad you shared your review Bill and your conviction!! Thanks for bringing to light something many of us Christians struggle with...where to draw the line. I just recently saw a video clip by Ray Comfort exhorting Christians to uphold Christ by not watching film with the Lord's name in vain, sexual content, and violence. We basically rarely see a movie any more because we usually have to turn it off or are really sorry we watched it at all. And that's even the PG 13 ones. We have been ordering old musicals, Little House on the Prairie, Christian theme movies by Fox Faith, old Doris Day movies... That may seem boring and Bill you know I love movies. I used to be a complete movie freak and get so much pleasure from watching a good movie but they are just not worthy or worth it any more. Colossians 3:1-4 says, "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." How awesome will that be!! The stuff of earth is just dirty rags compared to His infinite Glory and eternity!! I can tell you that WE got so much enjoyment from watching Facing the Giants, not because it was such a great, and deep movie but there was Scripture and the movie pointed toward Christ. We got so caught up in the message that the bad acting or less than fanciful filming all went out of view because it was so incredibly refreshing to hear the Lord lifted up. We would like to see more movies like that be made. Anyway, thanks for bringing this up and for your transparency!!

Love ya Bro!!

Mick and Bill, I enjoyed the dialogue back and forth and agree with you both. I love movies too and thank God for imagination. I've seen and loved all the Rockie and Rambo movies so far. Too bad Sly blew it on this last one. Thanks for saving me time and money!
